Who Invented The Battery- Introduction, Technology, And Brand

Page view

Batteries are among the most important technology in the modern world. They served as the main source of power before the invention of electrical grids and generators. Moreover, the development led to improvements in technology. As a result of this, scientists started to develop telephones, telegraphs, mobile phones, computers, and electric cars. These electrical devices cannot function without cells. In this article, we are going to look at the development of battery technology and the best brand.

Who invented the battery and when

Research shows that the first people to invent battery were Alessandro Volta and his friend Luigi Galvani in 1800. The scientists believed that electrical phenomena occur when a wet agent serves as an intermediary between two distinct metals. This idea was verified through practical in 1791 and the results were published. In 1800, they developed the first cell called a voltaic pile.  This battery had zinc and copper discs put on top of each other and they were separated by cardboard put in brine and piece of cloth.

The first models made by Volta did not make strong sparks. However, Voltaic pile lost minimum charge and produced stable current as well as electricity. Moreover, the engineers discovered that the best metals to use were silver and zinc. The downside of zinc is corrosion; Volta argued that this could be changed by using other materials. Nonetheless, the corrosion has never been prevented by anyone. Corrosion increased when it involved the production of high current.

Alessandro claimed that current is produced through contact tension, an obsolete scientific theory. He did not agree with the chemical reaction.  There are some critics who were against contact tension theory as an electromotive force for voltaic. Volta’s model had drawbacks like short circuits that resulted when the disc compressed the moist intermediary. William Cruickshank, ascot scientist solved the flaw by putting the elements on a box and not a stack. Another downside of Volt’s battery was the limited life cycle. It was caused by internal resistance and local action.

How did battery technology develop

Alessandro Volta with his companion Luigi Galvani built a simple battery in 1800 after a series of practices in the 1790s the cell was known as a voltaic pile, it consisted of silver and zinc that were separated by brine, sodium or hydroxide. After several experiments on the voltaic pile, Michael Faraday came up with electrochemistry quantitative laws in 1834. The laws showed the relationship between electric power and electrode material. Modern battery technology still uses Faraday’s law.

In 1836, a British chemist called John Fredric Daniel uses Faraday theory to develop an improved battery. It used zinc, copper, and sulfuric acid. This cell was more efficient compared to Volts. It delivered a stable and continuous current. In 1839, a British scientist called William Robert Grove developed a two-fluid primary cell. It consisted of amalgamated zinc put in dilute sulfuric acid and a porous pot that separated sulfuric acid from nitric acid. Additionally, nitric acid helped to prevent loss of voltage after hydrogen accumulated at the cathode.

French man called Gaston Plant’e invented lead-acid battery in 1859. This was the first cell to serve as a modern automobile battery. Even though the device had large currents, it remained a controversy for two years. Georges Leclanche's helped in the development of the current primary battery. The first dry cell technology was launched in the late 1880s.  On top of that, alkaline electrolyte batteries were introduced from 1895 to 1905.

During the 1930s to 1940s, physicists developed zinc mercuric-oxide and zinc- silver oxide alkaline batteries. They had the highest energy compared to other batteries that were developed. The advancement of powerful cells began in the mid-20th century. This was the entrance of lithium-based cells, nickel-metal hydride, and nickel-hydrogen used in computers, spacecraft, and cellular telephones.

What battery brand do you recommend

Energizer

Energizer is the best battery brand with 19 years on the market. The battery is expensive but it is worth the money. It is long-lasting, leak-proof and works well in extreme temperature of -40 degrees to 140 degrees.

Other top brands

Panasonic

Panasonic batteries are used in televisions, mobile phones, kitchen equipment, monitors, radios, and car batteries. Besides that, the brand has positive reviews and it sells batteries at affordable prices.

Duracell

Duracell makes rechargeable lithium battery, normal batteries, and superpower carbon batteries. These cells are long-lasting and come at cheap prices.

Maxell

Maxell uses bona fide to get achieve good quality. The cells are long-lasting and 100% safe when exposed to children and pets.

Powerking

Powerking is mostly focused on car cells. It makes sealed lead acid batteries with a high level of performance.

Exide

Exide is ranked among the top battery brands. It produces quality products that deliver high performance.

How to choose the best battery brand

The market has a variety of cells in various sizes, shapes, and parameters. Electronic devices use different types of batteries. For this reason, it is important to know the basic facts of the battery before you continue with buying. Here are the key factors to consider prior to going further:

Rechargeable/ rechargeable: rechargeable batteries are used in laptops, mobile phones, and laptops. On the contrary, non-rechargeable cells are for hearing aids, wristwatches, toys, and flashlights.

Durability: the battery should be durable because not all cells are used immediately after buying.

Battery chemistry: battery chemistry includes lithium-ion, lead-acid, alkaline batteries, nickel-metal, hydride, lithium polymer, and nickel-cadmium.

Cost: in most cases, lithium cells are expensive, unlike others. You need to choose the one that meets your budget.

Capacity: a powerful battery will run for a long time. The capacity of a cell is put in Watt-hours. Calculate the capacity by multiplying the battery's voltage by the amount of current it delivers.   You should buy a battery with 5V and 2 amp-hour capacity.

Operating temperature: the performance of a battery is affected by the operating temperature. For example, cells with aqueous electrolytes cannot operate below 0 degrees.

Final Thoughts

Scientists first developed wet cells that used metallic electrodes and liquid electrolyte. The components were renewed after they were consumed. Wet cells were only used on the telephone and telegraph. They were not ideal for computers and mobile phones. For this reason, it led to the introduction of rechargeable batteries and non-rechargeable. This includes lithium, lead-acid, and nickel-based cells. They are used in critical applications such as aircraft, spaceship, flashlight, and other powerful devices. There are several things that make them be ranked are on top, for instance, durability, low maintenance, and high power.
