What are battery requirements for electric cargo bikes?

  Increasing urban emissions, stricter city regulations, the lower total cost of ownership and ongoing growth of cities, and therefore lack of space leads to the European trend to replace cars with electric cargo bikes.

  This trend can be observed in the private, as well as in the commercial mobility sector.

  Electric cargo bikes have particular requirements for battery specification.

  A large capacity is a top priority for electric cargo bikes, the average should be around 1kWh. For commercial use large capacity is required because the vehicle fleet needs to run a full working day without recharging, transporting heavy loads like 500kg to be economically attractive for the fleet operations.

  For private use, the capacity does not need to be equally high as for a commercial use case, but as a standardized public LEV charging infrastructure is not available yet, charging a private cargo bike for lots of households means to take the battery out of the vehicle in the street to charge it in the home. For the sake of convenience, users are happy if they do not need to recharge after each run to the supermarket. Thus, a high-capacity battery is also very welcome for private use cargo e-bikes.

  There are two ways to cope with the need for large capacity: First, increase the Ah of the battery pack. Second, go for a multiple battery strategy.

  An important focus of batteries of cargo e-bikes, next to the larger capacity, is the thermal management of the battery pack. The higher current drain, while accelerating or transporting heavy loads at climbs and the longer operation time in commercial use needs a balanced cooling of all cells for a longer battery life.

  A further factor making a battery fit the needs of the electric cargo bike world is an intelligent battery management system (BMS) with connectivity functions that manage, that the battery operates in good condition. Providing self-diagnosis, recording operation parameters, information, and upgrades by air are the key to intelligent BMS development for enhanced safety and reliability of battery life as a service. The intelligent BMS also increases the value of the battery as mobility- and energy-as-a-service business model, such as battery swapping and rental system.
