Ups Lithium Battery Policy-Introduction And Methods

Ups Lithium Battery Policy-Introduction And Methods

Page view

Lithium battery has a strong versatility, so in the world, the transportation demand of lithium battery is quite large. As a leading logistics enterprise in the world, UPS's service scope covers more than 220 countries and regions around the world, which can be said to be a high-quality choice for lithium battery transportation.

Can you send lithium batteries by UPS?

For the current business type of UPS, it is completely feasible. UPS has a full range of ground and air parcel delivery services, whose business scope covers almost all kinds of industries. UPS also has advanced logistics system, which can provide complete process management solutions for receiving, storing, processing and transporting goods. And UPS can provide corresponding freight forwarding services according to the products, including customs declaration agency, LCL transportation, vehicle freight, air transportation and sea transportation, etc. Therefore, it is feasible and convenient to choose ups to send lithium batteries. However, the transportation of lithium batteries must be carried out in accordance with the provisions of ups. Violation of these regulations will result in fines or other penalties. Because these batteries may produce dangerous heat or sparks during transportation due to improper packaging and other reasons. These are security issues that cannot be ignored, the impact of these heat or sparks on transportation vehicles may be devastating.

UPS has clear transportation regulations for lithium-ion battery and lithium metal battery in transportation policy. These two kinds of batteries are dangerous goods and can be transported as dangerous goods. Transportation of them requires not only some basic safety precautions, but also some use of specialized packaging, specific hazard labeling, and specific documents certifying compliance with the applicable regulations. However, some small size lithium batteries and lithium batteries contained in the equipment can be an exception, and the rules for transporting these batteries will be simplified to varying degrees. And In the next part of the article, you can learn some detailed policies of lithium battery in transportation.

A unified package can be used to combine multiple lithium batteries in separate packages, but not all lithium batteries can be packaged together, lithium ion or metal batteries packed with or contained in equipment that are prepared under Section II of IATA Packing Instructions 966, 967, 969, or 970 in individual packages that are in compliance with the regulations may be consolidated within an overpack. Moreover, the batteries packed separately should also meet the necessary packaging standards. The words "overpack" should be marked on the overpack, and the lithium battery logo should also be marked.

According to IATA (International Air Transport Association), the capacity of all air transport lithium batteries should not exceed 30% SOC (state of charge), which can effectively reduce the probability of battery heating or fire and other dangerous events.

All lithium battery packs, modules and even components (including chargers) are identified as lithium batteries during UPS transportation. According to UPS regulations, these items should be transported as dangerous goods, which requires UPS dangerous contract. And for fully regulated goods, it needs to be shipped with a Class 9 lithium battery label.

How do you send lithium battery by UPS properly?

In order to send your lithium battery by UPS properly. The shipments of lithium batteries by UPS is mainly divided into air shipments and ground shipments, and the requirements for cargo specifications of these two modes are also different:

For Air shipments, Ups will evaluate the cargo based on the energy capacity of the transport battery, whether it is contained in the equipment (if there are more than 2 batteries or more than 4 cells in the equipment, the mark of lithium ion battery or lithium metal battery should be pasted on it), and the combined net weight of it. These assessments will affect whether your battery will be accepted for transportation and whether safety certification or more safety measures are required to transport it. For example, if your lithium-ion battery or cell has an energy capacity of less than 100 watt hours (battery) or less than 20 watt hours (cell), it is contained in the equipment, and its combined net weight is less than 5 kg, it will not be considered a hazardous material (dangerous goods). Otherwise, if your battery is identified as dangerous goods, you need certification information such as UPS dangerous contract, grade 9 lithium battery label, etc. And it should be noted that the lithium batteries contained in the equipment must be able to withstand a 1.2 meter drop test, and the equipment must eliminate the possibility of short circuit or battery activation.

For ground shipments, compared with air shipments, It has more loose requirements for lithium battery specifications. As long as your battery’s or your cell’s capacity is less than 100 watt hours or less than and it is contained with equipment (if there are more than 2 batteries or more than 4 cells in the equipment, the mark of lithium ion battery or lithium metal battery should be pasted on it), it will not be classified as a UPS dangerous good. And even if such a battery does not have an outer package, as long as its weight does not exceed 30kg, it will not be considered as UPS dangerous goods and can be sent directly by ground shipments.

Through the comparison of the above two UPS transportation modes, it is not difficult to see that air shipments is recommended for small-sized lithium batteries, while ground shipments is recommended for medium-sized or large-scale lithium-ion batteries, which can omit more safety continuation. However, the specific mode of transportation should be selected according to the shipper's wishes, transportation distance or other factors. For more information, please refer to the policy mentioned above and refer to the UPS website.

Under the trend of globalization of world economy and trade, choosing ups and other international logistics enterprises to deliver products to all parts of the world is in line with the trend of the times. However, the safety problem can not be ignored. Therefore, manufacturers or shippers should not be impatient because of the cumbersome safety procedures. After all, safety is the most important criterion for the logistics industry.
