A battery is the most important part of a car simply because the car cannot be started without it. Normally a battery works by transforming the chemical energy it stores into electrical energy. There is always a process that involves the reaction between hydrogen, oxygen, lead and Sulphur. The state of a car battery simply refers to the condition or the amount of charge that may be left in your battery. A battery may be in a good or bad condition depending on how long it has been used and how it has been maintained.
For example, a new car battery is always in good condition. Most batteries have a tendency to last 4- 7 years before they stop functioning, and then reconditioning is done to prolong the years. You recall means that a bad car battery is given back its ability to charge and be healthy. The reconditioning hour to most of the batteries is the last year of the battery service. For example, if your car battery should last for five years, then you should consider reconditioning it during the fifth year, and if your battery is not completely damaged, you may buy out two more years of battery service.
In order to restore your battery, you need to have the following items; water, gloves, water, safety glasses, a wrench, baking soda, distilled water, Epsom salt ( magnesium sulphate), a power drill, plastic replacement plugs, non-metallic storage funnel, a three-phase battery charger for lead-acid batteries and lastly a non-metallic storage container. The first step is to ensure that your battery is cool; that is, if the car was in motion, ensure at least it has been off for an hour. Remove your battery but first use a wrench to remove the cables, starting with the negative and then the positive.
At this stage, put on your gloves and safety glasses. Get rid of the plastic cell caps on the battery, and then use your power drill to drill into the sealed cells where you find marked with small markings. Drain all the fluid contained in the battery to a non-metallic container and add baking soda to the fluid to neutralize it, and later dispose of it. Use your Epsom salt and distilled water to create a magnesium sulphate solution, with the salt being one part and three parts warm distilled water.
Pour the magnesium sulphate back into an open battery cell using a non-metallic funnel and shake well so that the solution may be distributed evenly. Repeat the process to the other battery, and then ensure that your battery charger is put off before you connect the positive lead into the positive battery terminal and vice versa. Ensure the charger reads 12 volts before turning it on and then leave it for 12 whole hours before turning it off. Once it’s fully charged, remove the lead clips and use some plastic cups to seal off the drilled places. Return your battery to your car and connect it to the positive cable and then lastly to the negative cable. Your battery will be successfully restored if you follow every step.
One may know when to restore their battery if they experience the following; if the battery cannot start, if the car battery has lasted for four years and lastly, if your battery has sulfation and constantly reads a charge of below 12volts. In addition, a car battery that has undergone any major physical damage like having melted plastic housings or burnt connectors cannot be restored; rather, it should be replaced.
An old car battery may experience a low voltage output and may eventually stop starting your car. Instead of buying a new car battery, you should consider restoring it since that will save you money and time. As mentioned earlier, batteries contain lead and Sulphur, and because of that, they may experience a condition known as sulfation. Sulfation simply is the overlapping of Sulphur on the lead plates, which alters the functioning of the battery.
Sulfation is the cause that mostly affects batteries and leads to most of them dying. That is, the batteries affected lose their ability to hold any charge. A dead car battery, therefore, can be revived, but that depends on how it was used and how old the battery is and the level of damage done to the battery. There are many ways to revive your dead car battery; for example, if your car died due to a low electrolyte level, then one should make an electrolyte solution by mixing Epsom salt and distilled water and then adding it to the cells.
In case you lack Epsom salt but can get aspirin, do not get worried but rather, use the aspirin in powder form and add it to warm water and then add to the cells in equal amounts, and your battery will be revived. Alternatively, distilled water may be used, but it does not work in all cases. If you have no aspirin or Epsom salt, then you may use warm distilled water to top up your electrolyte and cover the plates, and that may be helpful to revive your battery for a drive-through.
Recondition is needed mostly done to batteries that have undergone sulfation so that the electrolyte may be cleaned to allow the battery to operate normally and get recharged. How long it will take to recondition a battery will largely depend on how old the battery is and its current situation. The reconditioning process has been described above, but just to mention, it entails the following steps; make a cleaning solution, clean the battery and then empty the cells, replace the cell solution and recharge the battery, and the final step is to test the battery. Normally the battery is left to charge for 12 hours, and if it hasn’t changed, one may consider leaving it for another 12 hours.
To sum it all, it is important to understand the level of damage your battery has so that one may tell whether they can recondition it or revive it if it’s already dead. It is fundamental to note that you should repeat the recondition process from time to time to fully extend the lifespan of your battery to one to two years maximum.
