Rejuvenate Car Battery With Vinegar – Introduction, Result And Working
Everyone always wants to make his/her battery last for eternity, but that cannot be possible. However, we can make our old batteries to come back to life with simple processes. However, there are so many myths that surround these procedures and should be avoided.
Reconditioning batteries does not make the battery return to its original condition, but it gives it a little extension. Therefore, what are the chemicals that can be used to rejuvenate a battery at home? Vinegar I one of the substances that are considered to rejuvenate the battery.
Therefore, we need to look at this vinegar's functionality in a battery, its effects, and how it can rejuvenate the battery. Modern batteries have additives that help extend their lifespan, but they might not be effective for eternity.
In this article, we shall mainly put our focus on vinegar because it is a readily available substance. Also, we can perform this rejuvenation work at home and with little expert assistance. Therefore, travel with me through this article and get the best expert advice.
Can you put vinegar in a car battery? It is not a usual thing, but we usually get stumping questions from customers. One of our clients once bought distilled vinegar instead of distilled water. Moreover, without noticing, he added the vinegar into his car battery and later noticed his mistake.
Therefore, he called and asked if the vinegar is harmful to the battery. Our answer was relatively straightforward that the vinegar is terrible for your battery. He called other experts and received the same answer, and he remained shocked.
The chemical components inside the battery will react with the vinegar and cause severe harm to the battery. The battery might even fail to work when the vinegar is added; thus, you should be keen not to damage the battery with your own hands.
However, vinegar is useful in cleaning corrosion on alkaline batteries. The alkaline batteries leak a substance that is not acid but a chemical that registers as a basic PH scale. Therefore, it is wise to clean a battery leak with household acid like vinegar or lemon juice.
Therefore, you should be careful when adding substances to your battery. Do not add a substance that is not recommended by the battery expert or manufacturer. Other substances like vinegar are said to rejuvenate the battery, but it is killing the battery for good in the real sense.
The sulfuric acid inside the battery engages in a chemical reaction with the plates. Sulfuric acid reacts with the lead plates to give out a sulfate. When the battery is charged, the reverse reaction takes place. However, this chemical reaction is not possible with vinegar that is a weak acid.
I had a neighbor who decided to top up his battery with sulfuric acid. However, his battery's acid content was more than the recommended, and it corroded the plates. After the corrosion, the battery was indeed dead.
It is good to understand the simple chemistry in a battery to avoid the unnecessary destruction of our batteries. There are so many battery experts who can assist you.
What happens when you put vinegar in a battery? If you like chemistry, you will know what will happen when you add vinegar to a battery. The electrolyte inside the battery is a solution of water and sulfuric acid. These are the main components that drive electrons' process transfer and storage of the electrons onto the lead plates within the battery when an electrical current is applied during charging.
During the discharging process, the lead plates will discharge the electrons and take in the electrolyte, as the electrons are lost. This means that the lead plates act like sponges. This is not a good example, but it is just for your understanding.
Therefore, if vinegar is added to the electrolyte or any other substance that can contaminate the electrolyte, the lead plates' ability to absorb the electrolyte is reduced. Vinegar contains about 5% acetic acid and extensive content of water.
The acetic acid inside the vinegar corrodes and damages the lead plates because acetic acid is very corrosive when it is exposed to metals. Corrosion of the lead plates leads to a decreased ability of the lead plates to absorb electrons during the charging process.
Charging the battery changes the process and pushes the electrolyte out of the lead plates and back into the battery casing. The electrons migrate onto the lead plates, but due to the damage of the lead plates by acetic acid, the process is weakened.
The damage increase over every charge and discharge process, and the battery finally dies. Therefore, to save the battery from such sudden death, dump out all the contaminated acid, and start fresh. However, you should be keen while doing this because sulfuric acid is dangerous to work with, even with protective gear.
After dumping out all the acid, clean the battery with Epsom salt if possible or leave it to dry if Epsom salt is not available. You should mix distilled water and acid in the correct ratio before pouring it into the battery.
Does reconditioning car batteries work?Reconditioning of a car battery works but only if the correct chemicals are used. Lead-acid batteries form insoluble sulfates over time, and this will reduce the effectiveness of the battery. However, you can remove these insoluble sulfates and make the battery better again.
Rejuvenating the battery also replenishes the electrolyte solution and allows the battery to charge and discharge properly. However, not all batteries can be reconditioned because they have different chemicals, and they work differently.
Some of the batteries that can be reconditioned include AGM, Gel batteries, lead-acid batteries, lithium-ion batteries, NiCad, and NiMH rechargeable batteries. Therefore, do not try to recondition any battery without having background information on the battery.
ConclusionWe need to ensure that our batteries last for a period that is intended. Do not kill your battery trying to rejuvenate it. You should get info from sources that you can trust to enjoy a longer lifespan of your battery.
