A load test battery is an activity of taking the measurements of amperes that are produced by any charged battery. The most prevalent batteries for load tests are vehicle batteries. The load test however is carried out using a battery load tester. To load test a battery, one must ensure that their batteries state of charge is around 75 percent or higher. The overall need for a load test battery is to assess the ability of a battery to start an engine. Besides, the load tester in use measures the voltage level as the tester pulls current from the battery. Further, it is important to note that a good battery under test, will be constant when subjected to load but a bad battery will show variations in voltage mostly which is a loss of voltage.
What does it mean when a battery fails a load test?

When load testing a battery the load applied to the battery should be?

Load testing using a battery load tester requires one to use a load that is equal to one –half of the vehicles (Cold Cranking Amps) CCA regulations for 15 minutes. Also, the voltage should not read anything below 9.6V and the battery should maintain a temperature of 21 degrees Celsius. The load is used to determine the voltage of a battery hence it is imperative to note that a good battery under load will be steady while a poor battery will indicate a higher loss in terms of voltage.
To ensure safe load testing of a battery one should consider a virtual inspection of a battery. A person should inspect to look for case cracks, the expected service life of the battery through the manufacturing date code, and lastly for any terminal security and corrosion. All these factors will ensure that one prevents a probability of an explosion when the battery is undergoing a load test and this also will ensure accurate load tests.
What battery needs a load test?
Battery load testing is mostly convenient for vehicle batteries although it can be used by motorbike battery too. For cars or trucks, they both need high power in terms of amperes to start their vehicle engines. Step three, ensure that you have removed the sensors that were attached in step two. Step four, this is where one calculates the battery amperes by dividing the number immediately after the CCA on the battery label. Step five, connect the load tester sensors to the terminals of the battery and ensure that the red lead is on the positive terminal while the black lead is on the negative terminal. Lastly, use the time to ensure that your sensors are left for exactly 15 seconds where you will read the load tester measurements and compare them with the value you got in step four. The readings you obtain in this step should be higher than that of step four but if by any chance the readings are 15% lower, one should conclude that their battery doesn’t have enough power.
