Can You Use A lithium-ion battery In Your Car?

Lithium-ion batteries are the power source for modern electric vehicles. These days almost everyone has heard of lithium-ion batteries, but have you ever thought that what makes these batteries so popular and special? For starting each battery is made-up smaller batteries that are called cells. Let us discuss one for understanding how it works.

The electrical current reaches the cells via conductive metal surfaces. In some cases, you will get aluminium foil on one side and copper foil on the other, and just like any other battery, there is a positive and a negative electrode. The positive one is called the anode and the negative one is called cathode.?

The anode or the positive electrode consists of very pure mixed metal oxide that contains lithium. The more uniform chemical composition and the crystal structure the better the performance and longer the battery life is.?

Yes, you are right the cathode, or the negative electrode is located on the other side and is made up of graphite which is a natural form of carbon with a layered structure.

The battery is filled with a transport medium called the electrolyte, so that the lithium-ions carrying the charge can flow freely. This electrolyte must extremely pure as free from water as possible for ensuring efficient charging and discharging of the battery.??

For preventing the short circuit there is an insulating layer that is placed between the two electrodes called the separator. This separator is permeable to the tiny lithium-ions. This property is called microproacity.?

Charging Phenomenon:

Let’s look at what happens when we charge a battery. When charged the positively charged lithium0-ions pass through the separator into the layered graphite structure of the anode where they are stored now the battery is charged.

Discharging Phenomenon:

When the battery discharges, the energy is removed from the cell that can be used as electrical energy outside the battery. The lithium-ions travel via the electrolyte from the anode through the separator to the cathode. The electrical motor converts this electrical energy into mechanical energy making the cargo.?

The total amount of energy available in the battery, the maximum speed making this energy available but also how long the batteries last is very much related to the materials used for making it.

Summarizing it all we can say that higher quality with pure materials along with customized formulations lead to improved battery performance of your car and ling life of the battery. Battery making should be strategically focused on cathode active materials with leading technology. The advanced products and continuous research improve the performance of the batteries at the same time will reduce the cost per kilowatt-hour.?

Are 12V Lithium-Ion Car Battery Worth The Cost?

For understanding whether 12v lithium-ion batteries are worth their cost or not let’s compare them with lead-acid batteries. We will be comparing these two batteries based on the following:

1.Capacity

2.Weight

3.Efficiency

4.Cycle Life

5.Reusability

6.Cost

7.Safety

Capacity:This is our first parameter that is capacity. A batteries capacity is the amount of charge that can be stored in it. Capacity can be changed in different models due to different manufacturers. But lithium-ion 12v batteries have always had a higher capacity per unit volume compared to 12v lead-acid batteries.??

Weight:Weight is our next parameter. For the same capacity, lithium-ion batteries are much lighter than their counterparts in lead-acid batteries. A good example will be the SLI batteries that are used in automobiles. SLI batteries have a capacity of 35 amp and the lead-acid batteries of the same capacity weigh at least 10KG more than the lithium-ion version.

Efficiency:The efficiency of a battery plays an essential role in the usage of the battery. In a battery, the efficiency is the ratio of the amount of charge entering the battery during the charging phase to the amount of charge leaving the battery during the discharge phase. In other words;

Efficiency= Charge/Discharge.?

But this value is dependent on the rate of discharge.

Cycle Life:?The Cycle Life is specified in terms of charge and discharge cycle. One cycle consists of charging the battery at the maximum level and then discharging it to the minimum permissible lower level. Lead-acid batteries have a life of around 300 cycles with a 50% discharge rate. While lithium-ion batteries have a higher life cycle with 1200 cycles at a discharge rate of 80%.?

Reusability:?Lead-acid batteries have the highest percentage of reusability. Almost 90% of the material is reusable while lithium-ion batteries have a low reusability rate.

Cost:?Lead-acid batteries cost nearly half the price of lithium-ion batteries. With the same chemistries, a lead-acid battery would cost you 15% less than a lithium-ion battery.?But the cost of lithium-ions is reducing at a rate of 15% per year.

Safety:?Safety of a battery is considered by its thermal runaway property. This is a process in which an increase in temperature leads to a rapid release of energy. The thermal runaway of the lithium-ion batteries is the highest as they depend mostly on the charging conditions.?

How Do You Care For Your 12V Lithium-Ion Car Battery?

You can double your 12v lithium-ion battery life with proper care. It can be simply done by undercharging your 12v lithium-ion battery cells. This means that you will not charge your lithium-ion battery cell up to its full voltage i.e. normally 4.2 Volts. This will make your battery cells last for more cycles. This is because of the structure of the battery cell and the chemical reactions taking place inside of it.?

The whole scenario here is that the plating of the negative electrode occurs at high voltages so for avoiding that you will have to do whatever you can so that the battery cell spends less time on high voltages.??

On 4.3V you will get around 300 charge cycles if you decrease it to 4.2V which is also the manufacturer recommended you will get around 500 charges. As you decrease it more to 4.1V the charge cycles go up to 900 cycles and on 4.05 volts that is 80% charging you will get 1500 cycles out of this battery.
