How to Make 12v Earth Battery-Introduction and Method
An earth battery is a type of battery that is made of two different metals and can be put under moisturized soil or water. Basically, an earth battery can its electrodes as two dissimilar metals, for example, copper and iron, and then use its electrolyte as either soil or water. The method to making this type of battery is very simple since you only need two different metal nails, capacitors, copper wire, wire cutters, and a voltmeter. Below is a detailed method of how to make a 12v earth battery.
How do you make an earth battery?
An earth battery, as mentioned above, is a battery that uses two different metals as its electrodes, and water or soil is used as the electrolyte.
To make an earth battery, you need to have the following; wire cutters, copper wire, Copper nails, Aluminum nails, capacitors, and a voltmeter or a multimeter.
Method; Take your copper metal and, using your wire cutters, remove about 1.5 inches of the insulation from the copper wire. Nail your aluminum and Copper nails on the ground, ensuring they are some feet apart. Take your copper wire and connect your nails together by wrapping the copper wire on the head of each nail's head. For a 12v battery, you can use 12 different nails for each type of metal.
To make the battery more rigid and able to get charge between the two electrodes, you can use aluminum foil to wrap around the wires. Just like a normal cell, the connection between aluminum and copper-nail forms a single cell. Connect your aluminum and copper connection to a voltmeter or multimeter to read the voltage provided by the circuit.
It is fundamental to note that the ion component of your soil matters in the making of the battery. The battery uses wet soil, bacteria-rich compost, or water as electrolytes in place of acids that are used for normal batteries. The earth battery, like the other battery, operates through the exchange of electrons which in this case are provided by the electrolytes.
An earth battery produces energy depending on the size or amount of the electrolyte. If you need a battery producing more energy, use a lot of soil that contains electrons or simply bacteria that can decompose the soil to produce the electrons.
How much power can an Earth battery produce?
A single cell earth battery can produce about 0.5 v to 5 volts. This type of power can be used for very small devices such as clocks, calculators, and pedometers. Most of the single-earth battery cells produce 1 V. The more the number of cells, the more energy the earth battery can produce.
An earth battery uses dump soil as an electrolyte because the flow of electrons is facilitated. A good example is when copper and Zinc metals are used and dipped into wet soil. The Zinc metal will react by losing its ions; the same goes for the copper metal, and therefore the circuit is completed.

For wet soil, electrons from the metal plates or nails are able to move from one plate to the other generating current. Soil rich in bacteria compost works the same, but the difference is that the bacteria help on decomposition, which in return produces electrons.
Soils rich in bacteria compost will always work if there is food for the bacteria to break down. Electrons are produced when the bacteria break down the compost. Always ensure your soil has enough compost for the bacteria to break down. If the ions in the soil or the food for bacteria is finished, it's advisable to replace the soils with fresh ones to continue the circuit and for more energy production.
