In our daily lives’ batteries have become an essential part nowadays. Almost our every electronic appliance is dependent on these batteries today because everything is converting from traditional wire plug appliances to chargeable ones. This conversion is due to our daily routines that have become more hectic than ever. Unlike every invention, the battery was also a need converted into an invention.

From the invention of the very first battery in the 1800s by Volta, this technology has evolved continuously and changed according to the new technological changes. Being a green source of energy, it reduces air pollution, which is the main reason everything today is converting its power generation methods to batteries. Batteries work as storing agents of electrical energy inside them to ensure it to an external source as power/fuel. The energy stored inside them can be from different sources, for example. You can charge a battery just by plugging it in a socket and from natural sources like wind or solar. Like you must have seen wind turbines; when the wind moves them then the electrical energy generated is stored in large batteries, and the same process is with solar; When the solar panels produce electrical power, it is stored in batteries for future use.

What is a good battery reserve capacity

Today we are going to discuss the highest reserve capacity battery. For that, we must understand what battery reserve capacity is and most importantly, what is excellent reserve capacity Battery reserve means the time for which a fully charged battery can keep its charge before being discharged. Battery reserve is a typical measurement technique for RV deep cycle batteries and starting batteries. For example; If an RV battery is rated at a reserved capacity of 150 minutes, it means that this battery will deliver a 25 amp draw continuously for 150 minutes until the battery continues to consider a discharge.

There are also different amperage discharge ratings. In heavier golf cart and deep cycle type batteries, there may be a rating of 56 amp draw or a 75 amp draw, representing the electric vehicles that are drawing more average but the most current amperage draw that we use or talking about when we talk about reserve capacity of a battery is a 25 amp draw.

When a 300-watt load is supplied from a 12-volt battery 25-amps are required. A battery with a reserve capacity of 120 minutes can handle this load for 120 minutes or 2 hours. But this is just a theoretical number, and this 120-minute time is 60 minutes in the real scenario because it is never a good idea to discharge a battery more than 50%. Always use a battery with a high reserve minutes rating.

How do you calculate the reserve capacity of a battery

Almost all of us use batteries in our daily lives all the time, but not all of us really know how they work or not understand that much about their characteristics. One of the biggest questions asked is about capacity. Capacity is the actual amount of charge that you can get out of a battery from one cycle of fully charged battery to fully discharged battery. Mostly battery capacity is measured in amp-hours. Amp-hour is the amount of energy or charge in a battery that can give you 1 amp or 1 ampere for one hour, so it is that simple.

Now the question comes about the reserve capacity calculation. This capacity is the time a battery can deliver a constant charge of 25 amp at 80-degree Fahrenheit without falling below the minimum voltage.

Some people think that reserve capacity is the amount of capacity left after providing the required load, but it is not the case. Let’s discuss a case for better understanding. Let’s take a generator with an installed capacity of G1= 500 megawatt and the maximum demand is P= 350 megawatt and we have to calculate the reserve capacity. The reserve capacity will be R1 so that the equation will be as under:

R1= G1-P

R1= 500-350

R1= 150 megawatt

So, the reserve capacity is the difference between the plant capacity and the maximum demand. But it is not the reserve capacity of a battery; it’s the amount of power left after providing the desired maximum external load.

How do you convert reserve capacity to AMP hours

The reserve capacity of a battery is the amount of it will retain its full charge before it starts to discharge. Its calculation is like this; You multiply the reserve capacity of a battery with 60 to convert the minutes into seconds. If it has a reserve capacity of 100-minutes, then it will get 100x60= 600 seconds. Then multiply this value with the battery amperage, which is 25. 25x600= 150,000. Now divide this number by 3600. 3600 is the number of coulombs in an ampere. It will become 150000/3600= 41.67. This is the amp-hours or the reserve capacity of a battery.

So, Reserve Capacity Minutes (RCM) or just reserve capacity is the ability of a battery to sustain the fully charged state at 80-degree Fahrenheit or 27-degree centigrade delivering 25 amperes continuously before dropping below 10.5 volts.
