Although there are a lot of types of batteries, the most used batteries are the ones with the liquid electrolyte in it. It is because having the liquid electrolyte comes with a lot of benefits. There are different types of batteries with a liquid electrolyte in them.

Some are sealed while others are not sealed. Another major difference between the types of batteries is the use of different elements for the cathode and anode. So, here we will discuss all about the electrolyte used in the batteries and the right way to check and add electrolyte in those batteries.

What electrolyte is the best for using in the batteries?

The electrolyte that is used in most of the batteries is made with sulfuric acid. This however is not in the purest form. When we talk about the electrolyte of the batteries, the sulfuric acid is mixed with the distilled water and then the electrolyte is made.

 

Why is sulfuric acid mixed with distilled water to make the electrolyte?

This is a question that most of the people have in their minds regarding the electrolyte used in the batteries. People want to know why sulfuric acid is not used in the purest form. So, the answer to this confusion is that the sulfuric acid is a very strong acid and in its pure form, it is not suitable for the batteries.

It is because it might react with the internals of the battery and damage them. However, when the sulfuric acid is mixed with the distilled water, it is diluted, and the acid becomes perfect for usage in the batteries.

What is the percentage of sulfuric acid in the battery electrolyte?

When we take the sulfuric acid for the battery, we want to make it perfect electrolyte so that it will not be harmful for the battery internals. At the same time, it is required to perform very well. So, distilled water is mixed with the sulfuric acid.

Here the percentage of sulfuric acid in the solution is about 20%-35% and the remaining amount of distilled water is added to make the perfect electrolyte.

How to check the level of electrolyte in a battery?

The batteries with liquid electrolyte require proper care and maintenance to improve their life. For this, the most important thing to keep track of is the level of electrolyte inside the battery.  So, here we will discuss how you can check the electrolyte of a battery by some different methods.

Visual inspection of the battery.

This is the easiest way of inspection of the battery electrolyte as this will provide you information about the quantity of the electrolyte in the battery. Some batteries will require you to open the caps of the battery while others which are sealed will not need you to open the battery.

Checking the battery with the help of guiding marks.

Most of the batteries have guiding marks on them, these marks can be used to talk about the level of electrolyte inside the battery.

Checking the battery by opening the caps.

Some batteries have caps that open, and you can talk about the electrolyte level inside the battery. Here is how you can talk about the electrolyte level inside the battery by this method.

?The water level must not be below the top of the battery plates.

?The water level must be about 1.5 centimeters away from the battery caps

Using the hydro meter.

Another method to check the electrolyte inside the battery is by using a hydrometer. This method only works with the batteries that have caps that open, and this method will tell you about the quality of the electrolyte of the battery. This method works when you take a sample of the battery electrolyte in the hydrometer.

The meter tells about the acid concentration in the electrolyte of that battery in terms of gravity. Here higher gravity means that the acid is in a better concentration and the battery is well charged as well.

How to add more electrolyte in the battery?

When we talk about the care and maintenance of the batteries, maintaining the electrolyte level inside the batteries is very important. Although it only works for the unsealed batteries, it is still a vital factor for improving the life of the batteries. So, here we will discuss the ways of adding electrolyte in the batteries.

What if you need to add a little electrolyte in the battery?

Sometimes the batteries need only a little bit of electrolyte in them. It is because the level inside the battery is very near to the lowest limit of electrolyte level. In this case you can add a little bit distilled water in the battery and your battery will be good to go.

What if the battery needs a lot of electrolyte?

Sometimes the battery has a very little amount of electrolyte left in it. It is because the electrolyte level is not very well maintained. Or the battery has lost the electrolyte in because of staying in the wrong orientation. In this case, you cannot add only the distilled water inside the battery. So, in this case you will need to follow the following steps.

Prepare the electrolyte.

The first step will be the preparation of the electrolyte. This will require you to mix the sulfuric acid and distilled water in the right percentage. Make sure that you take proper precautionary measures regarding the electrolyte as it is acidic.

Carefully add the electrolyte in the battery.

Add the electrolyte inside the battery up to the recommended level. Stay safe for it as the electrolyte might cause splashes.

Charge the battery.

Once the level of electrolyte inside the battery is good, you will need to charge the battery before using it and it is a necessary thing because it increases the life and performance of the battery.
