Does the temperature of a battery affect how long it lasts?
In the progressing age of technology, you may notice that there are substances and certain types of technologies being invented every day that are increasing the convenience for humans. Humans are now creating such technologies that will create an ease for them in their daily routine as well as help them in their complex tasks. One such example of a convenient piece of technology that has been produced by the human mankind is that of the lithium-ion battery. Lithium-ion batteries have a clear advantage over its other types of batteries for example the nickel cadmium battery or the hydroxide battery. The reason for that is lithium-ion battery has a much longer lifespan as compared to their other types of batteries and not just that, it also has a greater number of recharge cycles as compared to the other types of batteries before it can actually start deterioration. The other reason why lithium-ion batteries are also famous amongst the commercial communities especially the ones that are producing phones like Android smart sets, it’s because these types of batteries are having a small size, they are compact and can be easily folded and placed into almost every Android phone. Not just that this type of battery produces a greater amount of energy compared to its size therefore having a smaller size with a greater output is something that the companies find very desirable because they have to fit a small battery in a mobile phone making sure that the design of the mobile stays beautiful and elegant. Therefore, these are the types of batteries that have a great impact on the world itself and hence they are extremely important, not that they are just used in Android smartphones or iOS smartphones they are also used in the case of several other appliances such as a capacitor in the case of air conditioning units, in the use of electronic watches and several other applications of these batteries are present in this world. The lithium-ion batteries work in a very simple and precise manner, they consist of a Special type of lithium electrode which has lithium ions in it there are used to function as electrons to transport the current within the battery. These types of lithium-ion batteries have a very high energy to size ratio, no memory effects, A very low self-discharge rate that is these types of batteries do not deplete themselves overtime just because they are losing charge on their own which most other batteries such as nickel cadmium battery do.

Lithium-ion batteries are a special sort of battery that can only work and perform in a very limited range of functionality. these batteries can only function at a temperature of about 16 to 25 degrees centigrade. this temperature of 16 to 25 degrees centigrade is an ideal temperature for the optimum functionality of the battery however it has shown to work at the temperatures of about 35 degrees centigrade as well. the temperature at which it becomes alarmingly harmful for the battery and causes a rapid reduction in the battery capacity and therefore reduces the batteries standby time by increasing the self-discharge rate to a very high level. It has been shown that these types of batteries are only able to perform up till the temperature of about 35 degrees centigrade and add the temperature of about 60 degrees centigrade these batteries seem to function at all. at 60 degrees centigrade the battery constantly is losing its battery capacity and therefore is deteriorating at an exponential rate. this can cause the battery to explode or even swell up as a result.
Effect of Temperature on Lithium-ion Batteries
The hot temperatures can cause severe problems for these types of batteries because they are a wet type of battery and so the electrodes that are being used in the case of this type of battery must always be placed in a cool environment otherwise the main problem that will arise with this sort of thing is that they will be unable to control the number of electrons that are being mobile. The main problem with having a hot climate is that the not just the electrode but also the electrolyte gets effected and if it rises beyond a certain temperature, it may cause the case of the battery to be damaged. This can be highly dangerous for the people who are nearby as well due to the fact that the battery could explode.
Effect of Cold on Lithium-ion Batteries
These environments are very favorable for the battery to work in an optimum level, the reason for that is that the heat that is being produced by the batteries, are very well maintained and that they get exchanged very quickly, therefore they are able to perform at a very favorable level. However, with things, concerned you must know that extremely low temperatures can also become a reason for problem because then the electrolyte would get frozen and this will damage the battery as well since there will be no fluid movement the electrons will not change place and carry the charge, thus resulting in the failing of battery.
