Calibrate phone battery- introduction, methods, and factory

Page view

Many people nowadays have smartphones that use a battery. If you replace your battery due to maybe damage or old age, it is vital to calibrate the newly installed smart battery. The significance of doing so is that your phone will show an accurate reading of the state of charge.

Calibration is a measurement technique where a comparison of measurement values delivered by a device under test is made from a calibration standard of known accuracy. The standard device can be a battery from the same manufacturer.

There are no adjustments done on the newly acquired battery. You might be worried that the person doing the calibration might tamper with your battery's specification. The person performs a comparison with a standard phone battery.

Besides, phone calibration ensures that you install a quality battery. There are other reasons why phone calibration is performed:

  • The phone battery is new.
  • The phone battery may have been modified or repaired.
  • When the battery has been in the store for an extended period
  • When the battery's operating hours are over
  • After or before critical measurements have been performed on the battery.
  • The battery might have been exposed to vibrations, shock, or physical damage. These events tend to potentially harm the battery's integrity of calibration.
  • If you observe that the state of charge of your battery is not normal
  • A country’s policy may require that all new batteries be calibrated according to the set standards.

In short, calibrating your android battery or any phone battery means getting the operating system to correct some corrupted information so that it depicts the actual battery level.

Should you calibrate your phone battery?

The answer is yes. Phone battery calibration is very vital if you desire accuracy in the state of charge of your phone.  The Calibration process is recommended after 2 to 3 months of battery usage by manufacturers. Your phone's battery will drain, and its capacity reduced as you use your phone due to many factors among them, heat, usage, and age.

Many people complain about their phone batteries draining faster. Your battery might discharge from, say, fifty percent to zero percent in a short instant. Another case is when you plug in your charger. The phone battery will charge to full capacity. When you unplug it and observe the charge, it shows 90 % or even less. Your phone may be improperly calibrated if not damaged.

The danger of not calibrating your phone battery is that it might shut down instantly without any warning. Imagine you were talking to a significant person, then this happens. You will be frustrated and may end up losing what you were looking for. The worst case is when you are doing an online interview on a job you so desire; then your phone shuts down. You can imagine the disappointment. Therefore, it is essential to calibrate your battery regularly.

It would be best if you also calibrated your phone battery once it shows the following symptoms:

  • Showing one charge percentage for an extended period when plugged in
  • Failure to charge
  • The phone may be reporting battery issues through pop-ups.
  • Showing 100 percent charge and then dropping to a low percentage once you unplug the charger.

How do you calibrate your phone battery?

Knowing the significance of phone battery calibration, it is also vital to understand how the calibration process is done. The start of calibration is to design the measuring instrument that needs to be calibrated. In many cases, the phone batteries to be calibrated are already designed by the manufacture and used by you and me.

Most of the phone calibration processes are automatic. Besides, you can calibrate your phone battery by yourself. Below is a method you can try:

  • Ensure that your phone is fully discharged.
  • Turn it on and afrewhich you let it turn itself off.
  • Plug the battery charger and do not turn on your phone.
  • Allow the phone to reach 100% charge and unplug the charger.
  • Turn on your phone. If your battery had a calibration problem, it would perhaps show a lesser percentage when you turn it on. Plugin the battery charger.
  • Unplug your phone and restart. If the phone shows 100% upon rebooting, plug the charger back until it reaches full capacity.
  • Repeat the process until it shows 100 percent once you turn it on.
  • Lastly, let your phone battery discharge to 0 percent and let it turn off. Now plug in your charger, and the battery percentage is reset.

With the advancing technology, people have come up with battery calibration apps.  The procedure resembles to the one above:

  • Perform the procedure above until the phone battery shows 100 percent.
  • Ensure that your battery is at 100 percent before you launch the battery calibration app.
  • Launch the app and start the calibration process for your battery.
  • After the calibration process, discharge the battery to 0 percent and let the phone turn itself off.
  • Fully charge the battery without interruptions while it is off. Your phone battery will now be calibrated.

Does factory reset calibrate battery?

When you perform a factory reset on the phone, all files and data are wiped out.  Most Android operating systems have a feature called Battery stats. The battery stats keep track of your battery capacity, when it is fully discharged and when it is empty.

The Battery stats sometimes get corrupted by viruses and will begin showing inaccurate data. This causes the phone to shut down without warning.

Wiping all these files through factory reset might help calibrate your phone battery. After doing a factory reset, it is advisable to run all available firmware and operating system updates. This will aid in the calibration process.

Conclusion

You are now familiar with the significance of calibrating your phone battery. You may be thinking that your phone battery is damaged and buy a new one. Your phone battery may be requiring a simple calibration. This will save you extra cost.

Before you calibrate your phone battery, do a visual inspection of your battery. Check for any leakages, cracks, or bulges. If you see any of this, your battery is damaged, and calibration will not help. Replace your phone battery with your manufacturer.
