Battery Life Test Introduction & Cycle Life and Methods
Testing and measuring how long the battery will last is an important step in determining how well a battery is going to perform under normal conditions and under stress conditions. Large multinational companies always like to boast that they have the longest battery life and thus testing them is an imperative to using them for the long run, to make sure that they are reliable.
Now there are some detailed terminologies that as readers you must understand such as cycle life and what are the methods to testing that cycle life. So what is cycle life? Cycle life is the number of complete discharge and full charge that a battery undergoes before its capacity falls under 80% percent of its normal output. It is the number of times a battery can be completely discharged and fully charged in cycles before its efficiency drops below a certain range.
There are many methods to test the battery life and here we are going to describe all of them in detail.
What is battery life endurance rating?
Battery life endurance rating means the ability of the battery to give you how many hours of working under one time battery charge before the next recharge is needed. For example if you have a battery that has been working for 30 hours then the next recharge will be needed after 30 hours which is the endurance of the battery.
How many hours do a 4000mAH battery lasts?
A battery of 4000 mAh, at full charge, will last 4000 hours when the supply circuit attracts 1 mA of current. The same full charge battery will last 4 hours if?1000?mA (1 A) is fired. This is if the battery is not being used and just stands there. However if the supply circuits take more than an ampere of current then in that case it will take less than 4000 hours.
How do you test battery life?
First of all when you are testing a battery you must understand that the key parameters must be taken into consideration. This is crucial to your testing of battery life because to really achieve results the test results must be repeatable. They must make sure that what they are testing is fully controlled. The following are the important factors that must be taken into consideration when testing for your battery life:
load and duty cycle
These are the most important of the key factors that must be taken into consideration when testing a battery life. They must always be specified so that there is no dilemma later on.
The following are the ways as to how the battery life s tested.
Qualification testing is the most important part of the whole process. In this segment of testing there are 2 stages. The first stage involves the testing of the battery life as a whole or the individual cells of the battery. This is done to determine whether the battery is made perfectly according to the demands specified by the company or will it perform its function in an ideal and the manner it was intended to do. This all is done in the stage one of the qualification test to make sure that the product going ahead is completely fine and has no faults.
The second stage involves the testing of any individual battery to the utmost limits. In this stage of battery testing there is no line beyond which the applications engineer cannot go, the testing is made to arbitrary limits. This is made to check and confirm that if the product can withstand the extreme conditions such as an unusual amount of extra load, in adverse conditions. This is done to determine the safety factors and the failure modes.
Keep in mind these are two stages of the qualification testing in which there are two stages each comprised of a collection of comprehensive tests. The first stage is for making sure that the product goes to the company fine and the second stage is for making sure that the battery will withstand the conditions for which they were given no warning whatsoever.
Cycle testing is the procedure in which the battery is tested by fully discharging the battery and then recharging it all the same to learn how long the battery is going to last. This is made to check whether the battery capacity falls below 80 percent of its normal function or does it remain strong and sturdy. This test is made to make sure that there are no faults and defects when going out to the customer.
Load testing is done by putting different load on the battery and see how well they will perform. This is done to make sure that battery is going to hold its end when performing the job. The loads are similar to those that will be expected to be put on the battery by the customers. These loads can be of lower power in which case they decrease the amount of load put on the battery by adding resistances to the pathway of the current.
However if they intend to use larger and heavier load on the battery then resistance of much more variability will be used. This is all to make sure that the quality of the battery life is just right.
Shake and bake testing
Mechanical testing is defines as a set of simple tests for dimensional accuracy to dynamic testing to verify that the product can survive any static and dynamic mechanical stresses to which it may be subject.
Environmental tests are the tests that are designed to exercise the product through all the environmental conditions likely to be encountered by the product during its lifetime.
These are the ways that the battery life is tested. Keep in mind that there still a lot of complex procedures that the battery undergoes when it is being released in the market. It is made absolutely sure that they will be a reliable source of energy for the customers.
