For small and low powered devices batteries used are in the form of cells, called coin cell batteries. Yes, these cells are lithium. These are small yet powerful for the devices they are designed for. The upper part is the negative terminal that also acts as an instructor, while the bottom side is a positive metal.?

They might range from 1.5V to 4.23V when fully charged. The composition types of these battery cells may vary. There are alkaline battery cells, aluminium-air battery cells, atomic battery cells, dry battery cells, and Bunsen cells, etc.?

The two basic types of cells are primary and other secondary battery cells. The primary battery cells are not rechargeable and are for “single-use” but secondary battery cells are rechargeable and are for “multiple usages.”?

The coin battery cells both secondary & primary have an age of almost 2 to 3 years and are normally used in watches, calculators, small torches & also in some small toys. Lithium-ion is one of the major types of rechargeable batteries. Due to being rechargeable they generate less waste and offer better long-term value than primary cells that are single-use cells.

How long do lithium cell batteries last?

Heir average is about two to three years but if you want them to last longer here are some tips. Some experts say that these batteries do not have a charge memory so after every 30 charges, you should let these cell batteries completely discharge and then charge again.

You should make a habit of recharging your battery at 20% to 30%, not more than that, and not less, this will extend your batteries life.

You should avoid charging these batteries to full 100%. Charging batteries at temperature extremes may also harm your battery, some devices also have temperature control that limits battery charge at temperature extremes i.e. if the temperature is too high or too low the battery won’t charge. A moderate temperature is healthy for the batterie’s life.

Always avoid a deep discharge i.e. from 2V to 2.5V. It will cause an internal short circuit making the battery damage or can even destroy it for good.

The best way to charge a lithium-ion cell battery is at +-1% voltage constant current until it becomes fully charged. The second method is to monitor the charge current. As the battery charges the voltage raises and at a specific point approximately when the battery is 50% to 60% charged it begins to drop and drops at a significantly low level when the battery is up to 99% charged then this charge cycle ends.

Many chargers have features that can increase your batterie life, so selecting the best charger for your device mat extend its battery life. These chargers can end the charge cycle at the correct charge-current level. Knowing when to end the charge cycle is considered a key feature of the battery chargers in increasing the batterie’s life span.?

A lower float voltage charger that keeps the battery from achieving a 100% charge for a higher capacity battery to achieve the same run time is essential in increasing the battery life.

What are the characteristics of lithium button cell batteries?

Lithium button cell batteries are lightweight compact having high density. They have high cell voltages with longer shelf lives. They last a year if used continuously like in a wristwatch and for 2-3 years in other devices where usage is not continuous like remote controls of speakers and car central locking system. Compared to other batteries they are safer due to a small size and low power.?

Battery life greatly reduces by 10mA. Whereas the maximum current that you could draw is 20-30mA, it’s not dependable. The highest current that could be pulled was 10mA.

Without significantly degrading rated capacity 1mA was as high as you could go. The rating of the capacity would normally meet at below 1mA line.

Using 200mAh battery cells on devices that needed to 20mA beats 800mAh coin cells in performance. Passing 10mA hurts battery life.

It’s important to remember that battery cells that are new shall perform way better than cells from a warehouse 2 to 3 years old. It doesn’t matter if they are unused just there on the shelf for 2 years, but they will not give the same result as the new ones, nor they will last very long. They would go for not more than a year or even less.

What devices do button cell batteries work in?

As their name implies these batteries are designed to power relatively smaller devices. The most commonly used lithium cell that is also called “Lithium coin” is CR2032 having a 20mm diameter and 3.2mm height and the other lithium cell is CR2025 having a 20mm diameter and 2.5mm height. These are small coin-shaped batteries used to charge any device that needs a supply of up to 3V like wristwatches, calculators, car central locking remotes, car speaker remotes hearing aid, blood pressure meter, etc.

All those devices that require a supply up to 3V use lithium button cell batteries. These all are relatively small devices than the ones in which lithium-ion batteries are used like mobiles and laptops. One of the limitations in these batteries is that it is not reusable i.e. it becomes invaluable once its charge goes off.

It is also low current drawing which is the reason it is used in small devices that require low supply. It requires a special holder for the cell to be fixed in. In some of the devices that have the rechargeable variant of coin cells, they are fitted to the holder for permanent connection with solder tags. The devices using non-rechargeable variants of coin cells must have a holder and it should be as per the shape and size of the device using that cell.

These cells being too small require safety measures also as they attract children so they must be kept away from their reach because if these cells are swallowed, they can react with body fluids and can even burn body tissues.
