Are AGM Batteries Better- Difference, Charger, and Replacement

Page view

An AGM battery is a car battery built for two purposes and it is to deliver powerful bursts of starting amps and to run electronics or applications for a long time. The big deal is that they tend to last quite long as compared to a regular flooded battery.

Known as an absorbed glass mat, it’s one of many enhancements done to Plante’s original train light battery. Glass mats, cushioning the ultra-thin lead plates, will squash like a sponge. Manufactures, in turn, can squeeze more glass mats and lead into a battery. More lead means more power. Additionally, that squish or squash aspect means that the battery’s inside are tightly packed.

AGM batteries have valves that regulate the amount of oxygen and hydrogen gas enabled to escape during charging. They come under a broader category of VRLA (valve-regulated, lead-acid) batteries, usually utilized to store a lot of energy for a long time or for long-running energy uses. Introduced in the late 1970s, they mostly served as backup power for early computer rooms and telephone boxes. Their utilization expanded with the time to include military, motorcycles, aircraft, power backs for offices, submarines, and much more. Now, they’re found in everyday trucks and cars.

Many people wonder about what’s difference between an AGM battery and a standard battery. If you too have this same concern, then you’re in the right place.

What is the difference between an AGM battery and a standard battery

AGM batteries have unconquerable benefits over standard, flooded batteries-

More starts per battery

More durable built or construction

Faster recharging capability

Safe to manage or handle

Special valves that protect the lifespan of the battery

Over the path of their lifespan, AGM car batteries can begin an engine more than 60,000 times. It is more than 3 times the stats you’ll accomplish out of a conventional or standard battery. AGMs recharge faster as compared to typical batteries. Initiating your engine depletes the battery only a small amount before the alternator takes over. And when it happens, the alternator recharges the battery and keeps each electrical component operating in the car.

Due to their absorbed mats, AGMs withstand vibration and shaking better than standard batteries. They are even categorized as spill-poof, which means that the regulations and rules are more relaxed about moving them by road or by air.

Do AGM batteries need a special charger

Another very common concern that people have is “do AGM batteries need a special charger”.

Every lead-acid battery, which includes AGM batteries, work best when they are charged with at least three following steps-

Bulk- a steady current from the battery charger utilizing a rising voltage in order to remain ahead of the enhancing battery voltage. And once the rising voltage accomplished about 14.4 v, it enters the second phase- absorption

Absorption - the charger switches to a constant voltage and the current drops off as the voltage of the battery continues to enhance and finally…

Maintenance/float - the charger switches to a lower voltage of about 13.5 v in order to maintain the battery in a completely charged condition but not introducing much actual additional or extra charge to it.

That is the “Special” bit you were talking about we’re guessing. Lots of smart chargers on the market today have additional or extra steps but they always entail these three.

And the recommended charger should be bought. There are so kinds of battery chargers out there. They are built based on different charged devices. The high power chargers and low power chargers are not the same. Thus, before selecting a charger, you need to keep in mind that what’s size of the battery. Generally, a large size battery requires large size charger. On the other side, a small size battery requires a small charger. If you think we’re talking about physical charger size, then it is not. Larger charger means here that the charger capacity is high and it can charge a large size battery. Therefore, before you choose a charger, you have to know info about its capacity.

Can you replace an AGM battery with a regular battery

Well, Ye because both are lead-acid batteries. But, there are certain aspects to be taken into account before doing that-

Deep cycles - does your device discharge the battery below 50 percent on a regular basis Go with AGM, it will be inexpensive by not having to replace it as frequently as AGM batteries can discharge much more without being damaged.

Multiple cycles - does your device discharge & recharge in waves If yes, then go with AGM batteries as it has more discharge cycles before they break.

Do you require a very high current on a daily basis If yes, then stick with AGM because it has a higher sustained discharge rate without being damaged.

Is it a normal vehicle or some other alike scenario A normal GEL or WET style lead-acid battery will do fine.

Last Few Words:

That’s it. Here, we have covered all you need to know about AGM batteries - are they better than your standard batteries, their chargers, and replacement. We hope that this guide has helped you in addressing your concerns. Last, all we want to say that when it comes to chargers, make sure to buy the recommended one and get the one that’s designed to enhance the performance of the battery.
