AA Batteries Dimensions – Comparison With Different Batteries
AA batteries are among the most common types of swappable power cells available today. Have you ever bought an AA battery and found out that it does not fit into your device while you have been using another type that fits well.
This question is bothering most AA battery users. Therefore, we must go through this subject and help all users understand why the different sizes exist. There are guidelines given by IRE and ANSI on the required sizes of different batteries.
The standard size of an AA battery is 14.5 mm in diameter and 50.5 mm in length. Thus, device manufacturers use this size. This makes it hard t change the size of an AA battery because the device already has the standard dimensions.
The IRE and ANSI always give out the standard on the nominal values of the batteries' physical sizes. However, there is a small tolerance that manufacturers are allowed to adjust.
If we go with the nominal value of a battery, then there is one AA battery size. The tolerance allowed by each manufacturer brings about the difference. This is what gives us different sizes of AA batteries.
Nevertheless, the tolerance allowed is around a few thousands of an inch. Manufacturers, IRE, and ANSI understand that if tolerance is made too tight, then the production cost will be high, not a good thing for the consumer.
However, without considering the tolerance, there are different sizes of AA batteries. The different sizes of these batteries include the ? AA, 4/5 AA, and the AA. These are the standard AA batteries that we know, and we use them at home.
Thus, it is always good to have the right measurements of the device's internal space. This will help you get the right battery for your device and helps you avoid being stuck because you bought undersized or oversized batteries.
We need to compare the sizes of these two fantastic battery types. This comparison is mainly in terms of their sizes and capacity as well. 14500 lithium batteries are rechargeable cylinder-shaped batteries with a similar physical appearance as AA batteries.
The 14500 batteries have a typical voltage of between 3.6 – 3.7 volts. The capacity of this battery varies depending on the intended use and other features present. The capacity ranges from about 600 mAh to 2000 mAh.
As said earlier, the dimension of an AA battery is 14.5 mm by 50.5 mm. on the other hand, the dimension of a 14500 battery is 14.06 mm by 55.00 mm. you can notice that the AA battery is slightly bigger than the 14500 battery.
Thus, you should not assume that you could buy a 14500 battery for it because your torch uses an AA battery. You should first check the specifications of the torch before making your purchase.
When it comes to the sizes in terms of voltages, the AA battery is smaller than the 14500 battery. An alkaline AA battery has a voltage of 1.5 volts, while a rechargeable AA battery has a voltage of 1.2 volts. On the other hand, the voltage of a 14500 battery is 3.6 volts.
